Cloud Ranch

Modest Tieton dwelling beside a decommissioned apple warehouse, designed for arid summers, snowy winters, and agrarian co-existence, designed with Best Practice Architecture care.

Cloud Ranch sits among orchards in Tieton, WA, where a client purchased a decommissioned apple warehouse for creative work and eventually needed year-round living nearby. Best Practice Architecture completed a modest 1,110-square-foot residence (upper and lower) in January 2021 on a nearly one-acre lot—small enough to respect the agrarian buildings rather than replace them.

Hot, arid summers, cold snowy winters, and occasional winds shaped enclosure, orientation, and detailing. An 1980s camp trailer once served as temporary lodging inside the warehouse; the new dwelling provides durable accommodations without erasing the site’s agricultural history. The warehouse already held creative industry and temporary lodging; the new dwelling had to feel permanent without competing with orchard buildings or erasing agrarian history. Orientation, enclosure, and detailing respond to Tieton’s arid summers, cold winters, and occasional winds so year-round use is practical rather than romantic only. Best Practice Architecture kept the house modest on the nearly one-acre lot so agricultural structures remain the visual lead, with the residence as companion rather than replacement.
