About the Project

Lil Shingle is an age-in-place remodel in Mount Baker, Seattle, WA, shaped as a collaboration among a mother and her three daughters. Best Practice Architecture principal Ian Butcher led the architecture; Unique Art Glass (youngest daughter) made custom stained glass; the eldest contributed art and photography—so the house literally carries family authorship.

Completed June 2024, the 2,617-square-foot home plus 380-square-foot deck organizes daily life on one level: garage access, a main-floor primary suite with laundry, and generous living rooms that open through sliding doors to lake and mountain views. A lower-level ADU supports guests, potential rental income, or multi-generational living. Bellan Construction built the project; Smith Lubke Engineering, Unique Art Glass, and Cambium, Inc. collaborated; Rafael Soldi photographed.

As residential renovation by Best Practice Architecture, Lil Shingle proves modest spatial moves and clear circulation can keep a Seattle house manageable for aging in place without flattening its character.

Published project size is listed as 2617 sf + 380 sf Deck. Project status is recorded as Completed June 2024. Credits noted on the Best Practice Architecture project page include Contractor: Bellan Construction; Collaborators: Smith Lubke Engineering | Unique Art Glass (Custom stained glass windows) | Cambium, Inc. (Landscape Design & Installation); Photo Credit: Rafael Soldi. The listing year is 2024.
