Walnut House

Walnut House is a courtyard-centered residence by Walker Workshop in Arcadia, California, shaped around a close relationship between architecture, landscape, and material. Set against views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the low-slung home extends along the boundaries of the site, opening inward to a central courtyard with a pool and spa.

A glazed hallway crosses the courtyard and connects the home while maintaining continuous views toward the water and surrounding landscape. Running through the project is a substantial wall clad in Petersen Kolumba brick, which continues between interior and exterior spaces and organizes the residence into open, public areas and more intimate private zones.

Handmade Danish brick, weathered steel, and wood define the exterior material palette and continue inside the house. The main double-height living space brings together the kitchen, dining, living, and bar areas, with full-height sliding glass doors opening toward the central courtyard. Beyond the brick wall, the family room and guest suite shift to a more intimate scale.

Across the courtyard, the primary suite is organized around a private courtyard anchored by a single maple tree, with the bedroom, bath, and closet arranged around it. An office loft forms the home's only second-story space, with north-facing windows framing the San Gabriel Mountains and glass doors opening south toward a rooftop deck overlooking the courtyard.
