Mandeville Modern

Mandeville Modern by Walker Workshop is an approximately 19,000-square-foot, three-story residence in Mandeville Canyon, Los Angeles, designed as a contemporary interpretation of the area’s rural character. The house combines minimal modern forms with references to traditional farmhouse architecture, creating what Walker Workshop describes as a “modern rustic” home.

The upper level, containing three bedrooms and two offices, is primarily clad in western red cedar, while the lower floors use cement plaster accented with Santa Barbara stone. Pitched roofs finished with Ludowici terracotta tile further connect the contemporary architecture with traditional materials, while thin-line aluminum sliding doors are paired with steel windows.

At the center of the residence, a loggia frames views toward the Santa Monica beaches and uses pocketing glass walls to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. The lowest level contains an indoor lap pool, gym, guest rooms, and a caretaker’s suite overlooking Mandeville Canyon. Outside, the landscape includes a pool cabana, a 75-foot lap pool with a flush water edge, and a vegetable garden positioned on the green roof above the lower level. A sculptural steel staircase introduces a curved element against the home's otherwise substantial, rectilinear architecture.
