7 photosMercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is HOK’s multi-purpose venue for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United, developed for owner Arthur Blank as both a civic landmark and a flexible event machine. The stadium architecture is reported at about 2 million square feet, with seating capacity of 71,000 for football and 32,456 for soccer.
Design began with the roof: eight 220-foot “petals” that appear to rotate like a camera aperture, inspired by the Pantheon oculus, yet travel in unison along 16 linear tracks. The roof opens in eight minutes and closes in seven. The angular facade follows that geometry in alternating insulated metal and ETFE panels shaped after a falcon’s wing. On the west side, transparency creates a 16-story window that admits daylight and frames Atlanta’s skyline for spectators.
Fan amenities include varied seating products, a technology lounge, and the 100 Yard Club—a concessions run the length of the field with bars at each end. More than 4,000 miles of fiber-optic cable support interactive game-day systems, including roughly 2,000 televisions and dense wireless coverage. Operators can reconfigure the bowl and support spaces for Falcons and Atlanta United matches as well as events such as the Super Bowl, NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, College Football Playoff National Championship, and major concerts.
HOK lists LEED Platinum certification and positions the venue among North America’s most sustainable stadiums. Services on the project include architecture, engineering, interiors, landscape architecture, planning and urban design, structural engineering, ESG consulting, and sustainable design. The result is stadium architecture that treats roof mechanics, facade transparency, and fan circulation as one coordinated experience.
