New Acute Hospital at Kai Tak Development Area

The New Acute Hospital (NAH) at Kai Tak Development Area expands Hong Kong’s public healthcare capacity within the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Ten-year Hospital Development Plan. Located in the Kowloon Central Cluster, the hospital architecture responds to a growing and aging Kowloon population with a large, integrated acute campus rather than a single isolated tower.

Program metrics on the HOK page include 2,400 inpatient and day beds, 37 operating rooms, a neuroscience center, an oncology center, specialist outpatient clinics sized for more than 1.4 million annual visits, and a community health center. As a designated trauma center, the hospital includes a 24-hour Accident and Emergency unit equipped for urgent care and major incidents. Overall building area is listed at 5.38 million square feet (500,000 square meters).

HOK’s design emphasizes daylight in treatment rooms and waiting areas, supplemented by landscaped terraces, rehabilitation gardens, and a pedestrian waterfront promenade. A multi-level atrium in the Acute Block consolidates admission, centralized waiting, and amenities as a clear orientation hub. Subways, multi-level bridges, and landscaped decks interconnect buildings and tie the campus to the surrounding district and waterfront.

HOK collaborated with Wong Tung & Partners. Construction was planned for completion in 2025. Listed services are architecture and interiors. The project frames hospital architecture as civic infrastructure: clinical efficiency paired with outdoor healing space and neighborhood connectivity at Kai Tak.
