About the Project

Motor Build is a ground-up custom home by Ethan Charles Design in West Los Angeles, California. Designed over three years for a busy family with a clear brief for how they want to live, the project leans into fearless color, locally commissioned art, and bespoke details that accumulate character on purpose rather than by accident.

The kitchen is planned for a serious cooking enthusiast: dual refrigerators, dual sinks, and dual dishwashers are treated as program, not excess. That doubled infrastructure shapes circulation and work zones so prep, cleanup, and storage can run in parallel. Elsewhere, vibrant color and layered finishes make the interiors unmistakably specific to the clients—contemporary residential design with personality rather than a neutral show house.

Art and object composition matter here. Locally commissioned work and bespoke elements, including a living-room rug called out as a favorite piece, give rooms focal weight without relying on stock styling. Interior architecture and furniture placement support family life at scale: rooms that can host activity while still reading as designed interiors.

Motor Build sits in Ethan Charles Design’s new-construction portfolio as Los Angeles interior design that privileges client identity—color, art, and high-performance kitchen planning—over a single signature look applied to every house.
