Mid-century Muse

Mid-century Muse is a residential renovation in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, by And And And Studio. The existing house dates to the 1950s and had been altered through several earlier renovations that left a mix of conflicting styles. The studio’s approach was a major overhaul that looked back to original mid-century ideas and amplified the most authentic ones rather than adding another disconnected layer.

Work moved from exterior to interior. Outside, an outdoor kitchen and living room establish a stronger outdoor living sequence. Later phases added a primary suite, a new entry, and a carefully inserted second floor. Where the new entry meets the living room, a bespoke circular sofa organizes circulation without changing the entry itself.

The children’s floor is reached by a 22-foot stairwell treated as a ceremonial route rather than a leftover corridor, rising under a bold circular skylight open to the garden. The finished house holds mid-century history and contemporary residential planning in the same frame — a Laurel Canyon architecture and interiors project shaped around light, stair, and outdoor rooms.
