About the Project

The Word is a 4,115 m² (44,294 sq ft) library and cultural centre in South Shields, England, designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects for South Tyneside Council. Completed in 2016, the project reinterprets the traditional public library as a civic destination where reading, digital media, learning, making, exhibitions, and social activity come together.

Organized around a 15-metre-wide central atrium, the circular building establishes a clear hierarchy between active and quiet spaces. Interactive programs are positioned closer to the social heart of the building, while reading and study areas occupy more sheltered positions around the perimeter. Large areas of glazing and two projecting Lens Platforms establish views toward the River Tyne while bringing natural light into the interior.

The architecture responds directly to South Shields and its industrial heritage. Its circular form and vertically articulated façade evoke the fanned pages of an open book, while the material palette references industries historically associated with the area, including coal mining, salt panning, glassmaking, and shipbuilding. The building also responds to the historic Market Place and surrounding civic context.

Inside, traditional library functions sit alongside a FabLab with digital making facilities, exhibition spaces, digital learning environments, media facilities, immersive storytelling spaces, a café, and areas for community activity. This expanded program positions The Word as both a library and a contemporary cultural hub.

The building’s impact extends beyond its architectural identity. By combining accessible public space with technology, culture, education, and traditional library services, The Word creates multiple ways for different generations to engage with the written word. Its architecture supports discovery and participation while providing quieter spaces for reading and focused study, establishing a flexible civic resource at the centre of South Shields.
