About the Project

Squire Park three-unit infill with shared south garden walk, lower ADU studios, roof decks, and a Domo-like massing nicknamed Big Mouth.

Big Mouth House is a small multi-family project in Squire Park, Seattle, WA, developed collaboratively by three architect friends—Best Practice Architecture, Hybrid Architecture, and Steven Lazen. Completed February 2018 at 4,690 square feet, the building earned its nickname when a friend compared the massing to Japan’s Domo mascot.

All three units push north on the narrow lot to free a shared planted walk along the south edge; each entry faces that neighborly path. Lower-level ADU studios can generate income; roof decks catch western city views. A mural by Sam Wood Wilson and photography by Ed Sozinho mark the finished work; Hybrid Design was contractor.

As multi-family residential architecture associated with Best Practice Architecture, Big Mouth House packs flexible urban homes onto a tight Seattle site without sacrificing shared outdoor life.

Published project size is listed as Total Size: 4,690 ft² (435.7 m²). Project status is recorded as Completed February 2018. Credits noted on the Best Practice Architecture project page include Contractor: Hybrid Design; Design Collaboration: Best Practice Architecture | Hybrid Architecture | Steven Lazen; Collaborators: Mural by artist Sam Wood Wilson; Photography Credit: Ed Sozinho. The listing year is 2018.
