4 photosAppelsap Fresh Music Festival 2012 transformed Amsterdam’s Oosterpark into a temporary landscape for live music, electronic performances and festival culture. Commissioned by Stichting Appelsap, Studio Modijefsky developed the stage design and finishing elements across the two-hectare festival grounds for the event held on 22 July 2012. The spatial concept drew directly from the festival’s campaign imagery, which depicted rebellious ambassadors carrying flags, torches and fireworks. Rather than introducing a separate architectural language, the studio translated this visual identity into physical elements distributed throughout the park. Three prominent interventions included the Electronic Stage, hosted by Colors x Boiler Room, the Live Stage and the WeTransfer bridge spanning the park’s pond. Each interpreted the Appelsap identity differently while remaining part of a coherent festival environment. Flags appeared throughout the site in varying forms, scales and treatments, becoming a recurring visual device connecting individual areas. Integrated stage lighting contributed another layer to the temporary architecture. Working alongside the existing landscape of Oosterpark, lighting, graphics and constructed elements helped establish the energetic “Fresh Music” character associated with Appelsap. The project was conceived specifically as temporary event and stage design rather than permanent architecture. Realised in July 2012, it demonstrates how Studio Modijefsky used graphic identity, lighting and site-specific interventions to translate a music festival’s visual campaign into a physical visitor experience.
