About the Project

Over The Influence Gallery by AUX Architecture converts a 1930s bowstring-truss warehouse in Los Angeles’s Arts District into a 6,000-square-foot museum-quality gallery for street and urban artists. Completed in 2018 for Over the Influence, the adaptive reuse meets contemporary exhibition demands while keeping industrial character legible.

Five distinct exhibition spaces sequence visitors fluidly. Exposed brick, bowstring trusses, and concrete floors converse with crisp gallery surfaces so the warehouse patina remains present without competing with the work. Galleries compress and expand through slightly different scales and alternate among daylight, artificial light, and mixed lighting. A fully enclosed dark gallery supports video and light-sensitive work; a loop of interconnected daylit rooms handles large installations. Walls are detailed for substantial loads—from canvases to objects as heavy as a car.

The architecture stays restrained, prioritizing function and flexibility over white-cube erasure. Structural engineering by Nous Structural Engineering. The project stands as a clear example of AUX Architecture’s cultural adaptive-reuse practice in downtown Los Angeles.

The gallery’s client, Over the Influence, presents major national and international artists; AUX Architecture’s page notes the architecture remains deliberately restrained so exposed brick, bowstring trusses, and concrete floors stay in conversation with changing exhibitions rather than disappearing behind a white cube.
