Casa Libertad, designed by Salagnac Arquitectos, is a contemporary tropical residence located in Nosara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The project is conceived as an architectural response to both climate and lifestyle, where openness, flexibility, and connection to nature define the spatial experience. Rooted in the principles of tropical architecture, the house dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing natural elements to become part of everyday living. The design is organized around a central open living space that integrates the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas into a continuous environment. This core extends outward toward a terrace and swimming pool, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor relationship. The absence of rigid enclosure allows air to circulate freely while maintaining visual continuity with the surrounding vegetation. This strategy not only enhances comfort but also reinforces the project’s concept of “libertad”—a sense of freedom in both movement and perception. A defining feature of the project is its passive climate strategy. Instead of relying on mechanical systems, the house incorporates operable wooden louvers and open façades to promote cross ventilation. These elements act as environmental filters, controlling sunlight, airflow, and privacy while adapting to changing weather conditions. The architecture responds directly to the tropical climate, reducing energy consumption and creating a naturally comfortable interior environment. Materiality plays a crucial role in the project’s identity. Locally sourced wood is used extensively in both structure and finishes, contributing to a warm and organic aesthetic. The construction system reflects a careful balance between durability and environmental sensitivity, ensuring long-term performance within a humid tropical context. The building is lightly positioned within the landscape, minimizing disruption to the site and preserving the existing natural surroundings. Casa Libertad ultimately embodies a contemporary approach to tropical living—where architecture becomes a mediator between people and nature. Through its openness, environmental responsiveness, and spatial continuity, the project creates a living experience defined by simplicity, sustainability, and freedom.
