Elorea

Elorea is a perfumery and café interior in Koreatown, Los Angeles, designed by Studio Paul Chan in 2024 for the fragrance house Elorea. The project occupies a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival bell tower, converting an historic Koreatown landmark into a contemporary retail and hospitality interior where scent, material, and ritual organize the visitor’s path.

Programmatically, the space treats fragrance as a sequence rather than a static display. At the center, a sculptural perfume display unfolds in a figure-eight geometry—looping circulation that suggests ritual and repetition beneath the historic dome. Visitors move through layered spatial moments instead of confronting a single counter. That organization is deliberate: Chan frames the work as translating intangible scent into architectural form, asking visitors to encounter the room in stages comparable to a perfume’s top, heart, and base notes.

Material decisions carry much of that narrative. The perfume bar front is clad in hand-chiseled Nakdong, a traditional Korean wood technique, while its inverted ziggurat profile reads against ceremonial altar forms. Charred wood surfaces meet a monolithic stone bar top with a leathered finish—valleys and ridges that catch light like ink-wash terrain. High-performance surfaces sit beside elemental craft, a contrast the studio describes as cyber-industrial precision against ancient making. At night, underlit perfume bottles register beneath the dome with a quieter, votive intensity.

The café continues the same sensory logic against three arched windows overlooking Koreatown, serving drinks inspired by perfume ingredients so scent and taste share the room. The finished Los Angeles interior holds adaptive reuse, specialty retail design, and café hospitality in one measured composition.
