VSEC Levittown

VSEC Levittown is a 21,000-square-foot veterinary specialty and emergency hospital in Levittown, Pennsylvania, designed by PZS Architects to incorporate modern technology into a facility providing 24-hour emergency medical and surgical services. The building accommodates a staff of surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, emergency care doctors, and an acupuncturist, with generous reception and waiting areas, workspaces and support space for about twenty-five doctors and staff, and twelve exam rooms—veterinary architecture sized for a regional referral caseload.

Technical spaces include two surgical suites, a radiology room, a CT room, an MRI and specialty procedures room, a linear accelerator room, two laboratories with medical gases, and intensive care wards. The hospital provides advanced care in oncology, internal medicine, ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, critical care medicine, surgery, imaging, and acupuncture. It offers radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats and is described as the first private veterinary specialty hospital in the Delaware Valley to offer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer in pets—care previously available only at the University of Pennsylvania. The facility also provides a large conference and presentation center for continuing education for veterinarians and technicians.

As new-construction veterinary architecture in Levittown, the project concentrates specialty diagnostics, surgery, oncology, and radiation therapy in a single 24-hour animal hospital serving the Delaware Valley. PZS also designed VSEC’s smaller satellite on Front Street in South Philadelphia, extending the same clinical platform into the city. Together the campuses illustrate healthcare architecture for veterinary specialty practice at regional and urban scales.
