Forest House
Forest House by Faulkner Architects is a quietly powerful residence embedded in the dense woodlands of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, where light, texture, and tectonic clarity converge to shape an intimate yet expansive living environment. Sited on a forested sloping hillside, the project responds to its context with a restrained architectural language that celebrates both the site’s natural conditions and the lived experience of inhabiting space among trees.
From the outset, Forest House is conceived as a refined dialogue between structure and landscape. Its simple rectilinear volume is lifted above the slope, allowing the building to float among the trees rather than dominate them. Expansive glazing opens the interiors to panoramic forest views, creating a sense of continuity between inside and outside while capturing shifting shafts of light that dance through the ever-changing canopy. The orientation and placement of the house prioritize privacy and serenity; living spaces look outward into deep foliage, while more enclosed zones are thoughtfully positioned toward quieter, protected edges of the site.
Material expression in Forest House is both tactile and elemental. Natural wood cladding, left to weather over time, anchors the building in its woodland setting; the warm grain of cedar and other timbers resonates with the surrounding trunks and understory, fostering an organic continuity with nature. Steel supports provide structural clarity while remaining visually secondary to the timber and glass palette. Concrete appears as a grounding material where the house meets the earth — supporting retaining walls or anchoring the foundation — yet even here the texture and finish are chosen to complement the palette of forest tones.
Inside, the open plan promotes fluid circulation between living, dining, and sleeping areas. Light pours in through full-height windows, illuminating the simplicity of finishes and providing a continuous visual link to the trees outside. The living spaces are organized to capture views at every turn, with carefully framed sightlines that emphasize the depth and richness of the natural forest. Materials have been selected for their sensory qualities — tactile wood surfaces, cool concrete floors, and the transparency of glass — forging an environment that feels both warm and elemental.
Forest House also exemplifies quiet craftsmanship and thoughtful detailing. Connections between materials are resolved with precision, and moments of refined joinery elevate the project beyond mere shelter. The architecture accommodates the rhythms of daily life while never losing sight of its larger environmental context — an approach that resonates with Faulkner Architects’ commitment to designing spaces that are thoughtful, enduring, and deeply rooted in place.
Ultimately, Forest House is not simply a retreat in the woods; it is a considered architectural gesture that balances presence and restraint, inviting inhabitants to experience the forest not as a backdrop but as an integral part of daily living.
