3 photosUmbrio takes its name from shade: “umbr” from umbrella, “brio” for cheerfulness in Italian, landing on the Spanish word for shade. The lamp flips the usual umbrella idea—instead of only blocking sun or rain, a warm light is imagined coming from under that shaded form. The official page centers that naming and concept rather than published materials or measurements. Designed in 2022 for Lift Loft, Shanghai.
Designed by TONG for Lift Loft in 2022, Umbrio is a table lamp built around the familiar image of an umbrella and its relationship with shade.
Its name brings together “Umbr,” drawn from umbrella, and “Brio,” meaning cheerful in Italian, ultimately forming “Umbrio,” the Spanish word for shade. The concept reverses the umbrella’s everyday role: instead of shielding the user from rain or sunlight, the form becomes a source of warm, inviting light.
Designed in Shanghai, Umbrio transforms a recognizable object into a lighting piece through a simple shift in function and perception, giving the idea of shade a brighter and more playful interpretation.
