Muhly Table

Muhly Table by LAUN draws its character from the fine vertical rhythm of California’s native Muhly grass, translating the plant’s light, upright form into a sculptural stainless-steel base. The reference extends to Harry Bertoia’s Sounding Sculpture at the Huntington Library Gardens, where Muhly grass grows near the monumental beryllium-copper and brass work. Rather than treating the base as a conventional solid support, LAUN uses a series of slender metal elements to explore the relationship between mass and open space, giving the table an unexpectedly delicate presence.

Above, a triangular glass top introduces a clear geometric counterpoint to the grasslike structure below. Its shape is functional as much as visual: the angled profile allows the Muhly Table to sit naturally between a sofa and side chair while remaining distinctive enough to stand independently within a room. Measuring 21.25 inches high and 14.75 inches wide and deep, the compact side table combines stainless steel and glass in a composition defined less by visual weight than by line, transparency, and repetition.
