Refractory is a Chicago-based furniture, lighting and objects brand and design studio known for collectible works that explore material, craft and sculptural form. Founded by Angie West and Alberto Vélez, the studio combines traditional making techniques with contemporary tools to create distinctive pieces positioned between functional design and collectible art. Refractory’s work is shaped by a strong interest in materiality, American craftsmanship and unconventional forms, with many pieces produced and finished by hand in Chicago. Its catalogue spans dining tables, occasional tables, consoles, seating, lighting and decorative objects, alongside collections such as Promontory, Scimitar, Tributary, Tallow, Ammonite and Montura. Across these series, cast metals, glass, mineral surfaces and carefully finished woods are used to create substantial, expressive objects with a distinctly contemporary character.
