4 photosFour Finishes, Four Works brings together four mixed-media compositions by Michael Lao, created in 2026 and presented through Sumparwood’s Natural, Vintage, Black Walnut and Maple palette. Each framed work gives a finish its own visual setting, placing timber-like tones beside fabric, patterned surfaces, botanical forms and small reflective details.
The rectangular frame gives the series a shared format. Within it, the balance changes from one work to the next. Long profiles establish a rhythm; overlapping surfaces introduce depth; softer elements interrupt the geometry. Seen together, the four works make the relationship between a finish and its surroundings visible.
Natural pairs honey-toned profiles with blue and violet textures. The cooler surfaces sharpen the warmth of the background, while botanical details and irregular edges soften the vertical composition.
Vintage gathers a painted fan, embroidered fabric and pink-red accents against a quieter caramel-taupe ground. Fine pattern and translucent layers bring a different scale of detail to the grain.
Black Walnut builds a deeper composition around dark profiles, a green folded fan and stone-like surfaces. Small gold-toned accents punctuate the green and brown palette, giving individual elements a clear place within the whole.
Maple places black and gold fabric, purple accents and branching forms against a warm golden ground. Diagonal elements cross the frame, creating a stronger contrast between the light background and the darker assembled forms.
For furniture design and development teams, the series offers a way to discuss a finish alongside the elements that will surround it: upholstery, hardware, pattern and surface texture. A colour choice becomes a relationship that can be explored through physical samples and a design brief.
The works are presented as colour and material inspiration. Final finish colours should be confirmed with physical Sumparwood samples under the intended lighting, and companion materials selected for their intended use.
